An impaired histamine degradation based on reduced A01C (Diamine Oxidase) activity and the resulting histamine excess may cause numerous symptoms mimicking an allergic reaction. The ingestion of histamine-rich food or of alcohol or drugs that release histamine or block diamine oxidase may provoke stomach issues, headache, flushing and other conditions in individuals with histamine intolerance. Diamine oxidase from porcine kidney may help assist with these types of issues.
Histamine is not only produced in the body but is also present in many fermented foods, such as sauerkraut, sausage, cheese, yogurt, and alcoholic beverages. Tuna, olives, spinach, eggplant, avocados, tomatoes, cherries, and citrus fruits are other histamine-containing foods which may cause GI irritation or histamine related reactions.
